CHALLENGE

EFFECTIVE AND SCALABLE TRAINING AND SUPPORT OF WORKSHOP MECHANICS IN TIMES OF RAPID CHANGE
Constantly evolving technology, a growing variety of vehicle types as well as an increasing complexity of vehicle systems are the key challenges faced by car mechanics in the workshop. This requires comprehensive and innovative, while scalable and easy to understand training programs for technicians to be up to date. While workshop mechanics are working with the physical components of a vehicle every day, training courses on service and maintenance procedures in the workshop are often detached from the real object.
They are instructor-centered and structured around presentation slides that sometimes do not engage the learner. In addition, manually collating and adapting content is time consuming for content authors. This makes it impossible to feed changes or new information into a training course quickly and delays implementation of new technologies in the workshop.

“By using REFLEKT ONE as the base for our CAP platform, we have been able to focus on features which will bring the technician a direct benefit – e.g. superimposing components of a dynamic wiring diagram at the vehicle to eliminate transfer of information from different sources.”

SOLUTION

AN AR PLATFORM THAT MAKES TECHNICAL TRAINING AND SERVICE SIMPLE AND SCALABLE
The Bosch Common Augmented Reality Platform (CAP), a solution based on the REFLEKT ONE operating system, enables training supervisors and technical authors to easily create and update AR training and service scenarios for new vehicle advancements, allowing workshop trainees to stay updated and engaged and with the latest developments. In these training or while working on a vehicle - sessions, technicians use tablets or smart glasses, such as the Microsoft HoloLens, to view any new or updated vehicle information such as hidden vehicle components and learn about their function, rotate and enlarge objects or display component information on demand. The interactive nature of AR training solutions has proven to optimize the quality and time of trainings significantly.

In addition, CAP supports a unique “Trainer Mode” where the instructor can collectively share AR trainings so that all training participants - locally or remote - can interact with a single real-world or virtual object with the same 3D content displayed across multiple devices simultaneously. Training with Bosch CAP empowers mechanics to work more efficiently while performing less errors during repair and maintenance tasks. It further makes the business more agile as changes and new information are easily integrated into training courses, reaching the workshop faster. Due to the embedded enterprise AR authoring system the content can be created by domain experts and allows the same flexibility with respect to variants and localization as traditional content at the same cost.
